George McQuinn
When someone says George McQuinn wrote the book on baseball, they aren't exaggerating. McQuinn is known in the sport as an all-star and an author.
McQuinn was born in Ballston, Virginia, and spent his entire life in the game. His professional career started in 1930 with New Haven, Connecticut in the old Eastern League, but he also spent time in the Mid-Atlantic, New York - Penn, International, National, and American Leagues over an 18 year career in professional baseball.
As a first baseman, McQuinn was picked as the American League All-Star first 6 times. He played in 1,550 games, scored 832 runs and had a total of 1,538 hits with 135 home runs. He had 13,414 put-outs at first base, and another 1,074 assists while committing only 113 errors over his many years of playing time. His big league career saw him with Cincinnati in the National League and the St. Louis Browns, Philadelphia A’s and New York Yankees of the American League. He was with Cincinnati one year, with the Browns 8, and 2 years with the Yankees, ending his career in New York.
At the end of his playing career, McQuinn managed minor league clubs for 10 years and was employed as a scout. He authored A Guide to Better Baseball, which includes suggestions for coaches on all aspects of the game of baseball in each position and diagrams of various plays.
