Class of 1973

James C. "Jimmy" Leech

Jimmy Leech, a native of Lexington, became Virginia Military Institute’s first bona-fide All American football player.  He entered VMI in the fall of 1916 and scored an unbelievable 210 points his senior year.

Leech led the Keydets to an undefeated year in 1920 with wins over such powers as North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Virginia Tech, N.C. State and Catholic University.  That year, VMI held their opponents to a combined 20 points and scored a total of 431.

Leech’s greatest fame came from his ability as an all-around threat.  He was a fine passer, spot-punter and place-kicker, as well as an exceptional defensive back, a sure tackler, a good blocker and fine runner.

In addition to his skills on the gridiron, Leech was also an outstanding basketball and baseball player.  After baseball practice, Leech would often be found taking on VMI’s best sprinters and low hurdlers for short dashes.  He played good tennis, was an excellent swimmer and shot golf in the 70’s.

Leech was inducted into the National College Football Hall of Fame for his feats at VMI.
