The Class of 1974
Henry Jordan

1962 proved to be the year of Henry Jordan.  One of the key players on Vince Lombardi’s star-studded NFL championship-winning team, he was named Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year, Pro Bowl Most Valuable Player, and Pro Bowl Outstanding Lineman as the Green Bay Packers recorded their best season in franchise history.

Originally drafted in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns, Jordan became an 11-year fixture as a right defensive tackle for the Packers.  He was an All Pro tackle five times from 1960 to 1964 and was part of a Green Bay team that won six divisional titles, five NFL championships, and the first two Super Bowls.

Jordan began his outstanding athletic career at Warwick High School in Newport News.  He lettered in three sports: football, track, and wrestling. Jordan was co-captain of the football team and was named All-Tidewater, Eastern District, and All-State Honorable Mention. As a junior, he won the title of State AAU Heavyweight Wrestling Champion. Jordan was also active with student organizations and several times served as class president.

In 1953, Jordan entered the University of Virginia, where he captained the 1956 football team and was named All-State and All Atlantic Coast Conference. He continued wrestling and was named the ACC Wrestling Champion (Unlimited Weight Division) in 1957 after having been runner-up in the nationals in 1956.  Jordan served as Chairman of the UVA Athletic Board and was named University of Virginia Athlete of the Year in 1957.  As a student, he earned Dean’s List honors and received his Bachelor of Science in Commerce.  Jordan served as Vice President of his graduating class and earned the title of  Distinguished Military Student in 1957.

In 1969, Jordan retired from football.   He was posthumously inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio in 1995.
