George S. Hughes
George Hughes, a former William & Mary and National Football League star lineman, began his football career as an outstanding center and linebacker at Maury High School in his hometown of Norfolk. After graduation in 1943, he joined the United States Air Force and flew 22 combat missions as a B-29 gunner during World War II. During his service in 1943, Hughes was an undefeated heavyweight boxer for an Air Force team.
Entering the College of William & Mary in 1946, Hughes earned his Bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1949 and his Master’s in Education the following year. He co-captained the 1949 football team and was named All-State and All Southern Conference as a guard. Hughes was also chosen to play in the Blue-Grey game in 1949 and the College All-Star game in 1950.
From 1950-1954, Hughes was an offensive guard and tackle with the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers. He received All-Pro honors in 1952 and 1954. Hughes also punted and was a part of the Steelers’ goal-line defense unit.
After opening a hardware business in Ocean View in 1955, Hughes came out of retirement to become the offensive line coach for the Norfolk Neptunes of the Continental League. After 3 years as an assistant, he became head coach in 1968. Later, Hughes took on coaching duties for the offensive and defensive lines of the Canadian Football League’s Ottawa Rough Riders, with whom he stayed for seven years. His 1976 Ottawa team won the Grey Cup.
Hughes has been named to the William & Mary Hall of Fame. He was voted the Chesapeake Athletic Club’s Man of the Year as well as Man of the Year in Sports by the Norfolk Sports Club in 1979.
