William "Pappy" Gooch

The embodiment of Thomas Jefferson’s ideals of education and physical fitness, Pappy Gooch was multi-sport star who went on to become a leading coach.  A native of Roanoke, Virginia, he played four sports at Jefferson School for Boys in Charlottesville, Virginia.   He also attended and played for the Fishburne Military Academy in Waynesboro, Virginia. 
 
Gooch entered the University of Virginia where he starred as quarterback and led the Cavaliers to victory over such teams as Yale, the University of North Carolina, and Vanderbilt.  Upon graduating from Virginia, Gooch taught and coached at Christchurch School and St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, Virginia, but soon returned to his alma mater to serve as an assistant coach. 
 
In 1928, Gooch became Director of Athletics at the College of William & Mary.  While there, he coached five sports at various times.  Gooch served as the College Athletic Business Manager, and for his participation in athletics, he was recognized by students and alumni as “Mr. William & Mary”.
 
The University of Virginia presented Gooch the Thomas Jefferson Award in recognition of his long service.  The award was given to those who uphold the same ideals and attributes in heart and mind as Thomas Jefferson.
