Class of 1990

James "Suey" Eason

Suey Eason, born James Eason in South Norfolk in 1907, enjoyed a successful sports career at South Norfolk High School.  In 1924, he enrolled at the College of William & Mary, where he was an outstanding football and baseball player.  Eason graduated in 1928 with a degree in chemistry.

Following his graduation, he became head football, baseball and basketball coach at Crewe High School, where he enjoyed phenomenal success.  For twenty years, Eason coached Hampton High School football, finishing with a 158-50-14 career record and  winning Crabber state championships in 1942, 1948, and 1950.  Eason’s team finished second in 1946, 1947, 1951 and 1953.  His most satisfying game occurred in 1959 as Hampton faced Granby High School at Darling Stadium in Hampton, Virginia.  Eason’s son, who posted the two longest runs of his career that day, led the Crabbers to victory and Coach Eason’s 200th win as a high school coach.

William & Mary offered Eason a ten-year contract to direct athletics and coach, however, he resigned from the position with his alma mater two months into the contract.  Eason retired from coaching after the 1960 season to become Hampton’s first full-time Director of Recreation.  In 1961, he wrote and published his first book, The Crying Towel, which covered his coaching experiences and philosophy.  He was inducted into the William & Mary Athletic Hall of Fame and was twice voted Man of the Year by the Peninsula Sports Club.
