The Horse: Galloping to Greatness
July 12 to September 7, 2008

In the 1700s, Virginia emerged as the pre-eminent horse breeding area in America. Today, horses remain a major interest in the Commonwealth. This is exemplified in the culture and economy of Virginia through hunts, races, polo matches, and the best riding schools in America.
This summer, from July 12 to September 7, the Hall of Fame will host The Horse: Galloping to Greatness, an exhibition illustrating the various roles of horses in Virginia, yesterday and today, including sport, work, entertainment and warfare.
Highlights of the exhibition include:
Faces at the Races: The Equine Culture of Virginia, a series of 35 portraits by Norfolk photographer Glen McClure. Through classical black and white portraiture, these images document people and institutions that truly represent horse culture in Virginia. Curated by Jeffrey Allison, Paul Mellon Collections Educator of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond).
Displays of Hall of Fame inductees Peggy Augustus, Christopher Chenery, Jean McLean Davis, and Paul Mellon.
Artifacts from the storied racing career of Virginia's own Secretariat.
A children's activity area with educational components and games.
